SFA: Curiosity Corner
Preschool curriculum — Pre-K
Oral language is the foundation reading is built on. Children who arrive at kindergarten with strong vocabulary and language skills learn to read faster and read better. Curiosity Corner is designed to build those skills — deliberately, systematically, starting in preschool.
It's a comprehensive PreK curriculum that develops children across nine domains — language and literacy, mathematics, cognitive skills, social development, science, social studies, creative expression, and physical development — through 18 two-week thematic units that give children repeated, structured opportunities to hear, use, and own new vocabulary.
In a randomized trial, children who attended Curiosity Corner showed significantly stronger literacy outcomes at the end of kindergarten (ES = +0.39) — findings that held up in an independent systematic review of 27 early childhood programs by Johns Hopkins University researchers.

Inside a Curiosity Corner lesson
Oral language and vocabulary
Thematic vocabulary is introduced and practiced daily. Student talk outweighs teacher talk in every lesson — children speak in complete sentences, use new words in context, and build the expressive language that makes reading comprehension possible.
Early literacy foundations
Letter recognition, phonological awareness, and concepts of print through interactive read-alouds, story retelling, and hands-on activities.
Mathematics
Number sense, patterns, and reasoning embedded in daily routines and thematic units.
Social and learning skills
Getting Along Together skills woven throughout, so children arrive at kindergarten already knowing how to work with others.
The whole child
Science, social studies, creative expression, and physical development are all addressed.
What a Curiosity Corner classroom looks like
Every day, children are listening, speaking, and practicing in structured cooperative routines — student talk always outweighs teacher talk. Teachers follow detailed daily lesson plans that make consistent, high-quality instruction straightforward to deliver.
Home learning activities — including original video content developed in partnership with Sesame Workshop for children and families to watch together — extend vocabulary and literacy practice beyond the classroom, connecting school and family from day one.

How Curiosity Corner connects to the rest of SFA
For schools with PreK, this is where SFA's coherent literacy pathway begins. Children who complete Curiosity Corner enter KinderCorner with stronger oral language, broader vocabulary, and the cooperative learning habits that make kindergarten instruction more effective from day one.
Curiosity Corner is also available as a standalone PreK curriculum — independent of full SFA adoption. Standalone implementation requires coaching support to ensure strong outcomes.
